You probably already know that in February 2022 the new Scottish home fire safety legislation comes into effect. This means Every home in Scotland must have smoke and heat detectors installed that interlink with each other. Carbon monoxide detectors are also required but they are not required to interlink with the other devices.

What do they mean by interlinked?

When any one device (whether it’s a smoke or heat detector) triggers they all activate at the same time. This law is being put in place so home owners and tennants will hear audible warnings no matter where they are in their home. Interlinked smoke and heat detectors will be required by law in every home in Scotland by February 2022, whether you live in a ten bedroom mansion or a one bedroom flat and everything in between.

So how many interlink detectors do I need?

The best place to get this information is the .gov website
As a quick rundown you would require
1x heat detector in your kitchen
1x smoke detector in your main living area ie lounge
1x smoke detector in every hallway or landing
1x CO detector near your boiler and in a room with a wood burning fireplace if you’re lucky enough to have one.

What are the rules with the CO Carbon Monoxide detectors?

Carbon Monoxide detectors are not required to interlink with the other smoke and heat detectors. Wireless CO detectors should have a sealed battery with a life span of up to 10 years and it must have the British kitemark EN 50291-1.

Who will police this scheme?

Though we can’t guarantee this we think probably no-one. It’s very unlikely the ‘Fire interlink police’ will chap every door in Scotland. That doesn’t mean you should ignore the legislation. After all, it has been put in place for everyone’s safety. The problem will arise if you are selling your house and you can bet your bottom pound, insurance companies will have a field day when it comes to fire damage claims.

Can Innovate Alarms install interlink detectors?

Absolutely. We have literally installed hundreds of interlinked systems into houses across the central belt of Scotland and we will install many more. All you need to do is look at our very competitive pricing below and if your happy contact us and we’ll book you in.

Is there anything else I need to know?

Yes, we’re glad you asked ;). Picture the scene; for some reason one of your devices activates setting off all the smoke and heat detectors in your house!! CHAOS ensues while trying to silence all of them. For a small fee we can also add our controller to the system which is also battery operated. This clever little device allows you to silence all the detectors from one convenient location. It can also advise which detector activated. The controller is included in deals 2 and 3 above.

We had a little bit of fun while typing up this blog, but fire is a serious threat and should not be taken lightly.

The new fire legislation is brought in for all our safety and we should all comply with this law.

Stay safe everyone.
